Intent

At St Alban & St Stephen Primary School, we want every child to feel confident, capable and positive about maths.

We teach maths so that children can:

  • understand numbers and how they work
  • solve problems
  • think logically and creatively
  • use maths in everyday life
  • feel resilient and learn from mistakes

We believe maths is not just about getting the right answer — it’s about thinking, exploring and trying different ways to solve problems.

Implementation

At St Alban & St Stephen, we ensure that children understand mathematical ideas deeply and build confidence in using them. Lessons begin by revisiting prior learning and linking new concepts to what children already know. Key skills are modelled step by step, using objects, pictures, numbers, and words, and children are encouraged to practise, discuss, and work collaboratively. Mistakes are treated as learning opportunities, helping children develop resilience and independence.

We make clear connections between maths and other subjects, such as science, computing, art, and design technology, so children can see how maths is applied in the real world. Children are supported or challenged according to their needs, ensuring all pupils make progress and feel successful.

Children also use online platforms to practise and build fluency, including:

  • MyMaths

  • Numbots (KS1)

  • Times Tables Rock Stars (KS1 & 2)

Through this approach, children develop:

  • Quick recall of number facts and times tables

  • Confidence with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division

  • Understanding of fractions, shapes, measures, and statistics

  • Problem-solving skills and mathematical vocabulary

  • Resilience, independence, and enjoyment of maths

Our Maths curriculum is fully aligned with the National Curriculum and is designed to ensure all pupils develop the knowledge, skills, and understanding outlined within it.

Impact

By the time children leave St Alban & St Stephen, they speak confidently about their maths learning, solve problems independently, persevere when tasks are challenging, and enjoy exploring mathematical concepts. They are well prepared for secondary school and everyday life, developing into confident mathematicians, capable problem-solvers, and critical thinkers with the skills and mindset to succeed both in the classroom and beyond.
