It has been the busiest week yet in Year 1, as the children embarked on their first week back into Spring 1!
We began the week by reflecting on Epiphany, which was celebrated on the 6th January. We talked about the meaning behind the day and we all painted our own picture of the Three Kings travelling to visit the baby Jesus. Each painting is unique and beautiful.
We have also moved onto our new topic in RE, which is exploring the ‘Special People’ in our lives, community – as well as how Jesus is a special person in our lives. This week, we were thinking about who is special in our lives and why.
In other news this week, Year 1 were very excited to have a very mysterious letter from a meerkat called Sunny. Sunny also sent the class a copy of his book, ‘Meerkat Mail’, which tells the story of how he travelled to different places – sending postcards along the way. Unfortunately, Sunny’s plans to travel to his ‘perfect’ place very quickly go wrong. This week, the children have been sharing their thoughts about Sunny’s feelings, creating story maps and writing recounts in first person.
In Art, we have built upon our knowledge of primary colours last week and have painted the secondary colours.
In Science, we have started our new topic, ‘Materials’. We have discussed what different materials there are in the world and sorted some real objects in the classroom by it’s material. Next week, we will be learning about objects that use more than one material.
All week in maths we have been learning about using comparative language, for comparing; height, length, mass and time. We had a friendly competition in class to see who could complete an activity in the quickest time against a stopwatch. We then used our mathematical language to compare the results.
In topic, we learnt a new word, which was ‘Equator’. We discussed what the equator is and which countries it goes across. We also wrote down some cool facts about it.
