Our new Year 5 classes, Cedar and Maple, have had a great first week back at school and are settling in well to their new classrooms and life in Upper Key Stage 2.
English
We read The Lost Happy Endings by Carol Anne Duffy which is an alternative fairy tale. We have analysed the author’s use of figurative language, and then practised writing sentences using our own. Additionally, we have also looked at how authors can create a different atmosphere depending on their word choices or use of prepositional phrases. The children then applied the skills they learned to write an atmospheric piece about their main character returning home through dark, scary woods.
Maths
We are learning about place value, looking at numbers and how we say and write numbers up to 1,000,000. We will be moving onto looking at how to interpret negative numbers later on this week.
Science: Let the forces be with you!
We have begun our new science topic on Forces. The children learned what gravity was, and then conducted an investigation to see how a meteorite’s weight affected the diameter of a crater. To do this, we used different sized marbles to act as the meteorite, and dropped these from the same height and then recorded the diameter.
The children enjoyed the activity, though there was a lot of flour spillage!
