It was lovely to welcome the Year 1 children back to school this week. It sounds like they all had an amazing half term rest!
This week, we have started our new topic, ‘The Space Race’. As part of this topic, we have look at the story ‘Look Up’ by Nathan Bryon. The children spent the beginning of the week looking at the front cover and predicting what the story might be about. They wrote about what they can see, what they think will happen and what they wonder about the story. Later in the week, the children created their own flyers to try to persuade people to come and see the meteor shower!! We learnt about bossy verbs and how to use persuasive language to encourage their audience.
Some children decided to extend their interest in our new story by creating a beautiful collaborative piece of artwork.
In RE, as our ‘Belonging’ topic comes to an end, the children have been thinking about religious signs and symbols. The children made their own baptismal candle and wrote what the candle represents.
Lastly, in Art we have started looking at a new artist Lanchen Mihalic, who specialises in exploring space through painting. The children have explored a new skill to try and create their own stars. They have been flicking paint to create the effect of different sized stars and constellations.
