This week in science we thought about shopping. Well, shopping bags to be precise and we wondered which material would make the best shopping bag. We discussed the properties a really good shopping bag would have and although waterproof and lightweight seemed to be important properties, we thought that strength was the most important. In order to test effectively, we thought it vital to test one property. We also recalled that we needed to conduct a fair test whereby we changed only the material of the bag and nothing else.
We set up the test by using metre sticks across two chairs with the handles slid across the sticks. We placed heavy items (water bottles!) inside and weighed the bottles as we went. We recorded our results in a table, observing closely. We then presented our data in a bar graph and drew conclusions from our data. We were able to give reasons why one type of bag is stronger than another.
Fantastic investigating, scientists of the future!
