We had lots of fun in our Science lesson this week. We have started a new topic about ‘Sounds’ and wanted to find out about how sounds are made. We explored Making sounds in different ways.
When we plucked the ‘strings’ on our elastic band guitars, we saw that the strings were vibrating. We realised that the vibrations were producing the sound that we could hear.
We used a tuning fork to explore sound. We banged the tuning fork on the table to make a sound. When we put the tip of the tuning fork in water, we could see vibrations in the water.
We hit a cymbal with a beater. When we touched the cymbal we could feel that it was vibrating.
We sprinkled some grains of rice on the top of a drum. When we banged the drum, we could see the rice jumping and moving.
We pushed the end of the ruler down and listened carefully. The ruler vibrated up and down and we could hear a sound.
We concluded that sounds are made when a sound source vibrates.
