Following on from our exciting first week back, we have continued to dive right into our new topic ‘Down In The Garden’. The children have been excellent scientists, closely observing and commenting on the changes that have occurred over the past week with our cress seeds. We have had lots of interesting conversations about how and why certain seeds grew more effectively than others. The children have applied their fascination for our new topic by independently planting their own seeds as well as investigating different minibeasts in our role-play areas!
As well, over the past two weeks we have been exploring the classic story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. The children have enjoyed acting out different scenes from the story, first pretending to be wiggly caterpillars that eat lots of different foods, eventually creating their own chrysalis to allow them to become beautiful flying butterflies. Over the week, the children have been engaging in a range of challenging focused writing tasks, but have also produced beautiful story maps and artwork during their child-initiated learning.

However, this week the children have not only been working hard in Science and Literacy, but they have also been fantastic mathematicians. This week, the children have been introduced to the part-whole model, which is a simple representation to help with early addition, subtraction and division. Using a range of resources and activities, the children have shown incredible mathematical skills and knowledge, which we are going to explore even further next week!
