This week we decided to dedicate a whole afternoon to Science and focus on investigating two forces – namely air resistance and magnetism. We used mini paper ‘helicopters’ to demonstrate how a larger surface area encounters more air resistance. We learnt that air resistance pushed the helicopters upwards as gravity tried to pull them downwards so they descended slowly. We also investigated the force of magnetism by making games using magnets. We made a fishing game using dowelling rods on which was tied a piece of wool, with a magnet on the end of it. We then made paper fish and coloured them in before we played a game which involved closing your eyes and catching as many fish as you can, using your magnet fishing rod. Another game with magnets involved creating a track and using a magnet to guide a paper clip along it without touching the sides of the track. The children had great fun making these games and even more fun playing them !! 🙂
