Year 5 have enjoyed immersing themselves this term – both in the swimming pool and in all things Greek! The children have enjoyed exploring Greek myths and Ancient Greek history. With this in mind we also looked at plinth sculpture as just one element of culture the Ancient Greeks passed down to us today. The children created a monster of their own, both on paper, which they then described beautifully in their English books, and then later they sculpted another beast in clay.
When we read about the Battle of Marathon and the role of General Miltiades in creating the phalanx battle formation with hoplites, we decided to head outside to form our own phalanx to face the line of invading Persians. We have been shocked to find that girls were not treated equally to boys in Ancient Athens and appalled to learn what the Spartans did to children they deemed to be “weak”. Ask your child to tell you more about our lively discussions!
