This half term, our Catholic Social Teaching topic is ‘Stewardship Of God’s Creation’. This week to celebrate the beautiful world we live in, we have had our annual Green Day. On Green Day, the whole school come together to think about how we can care for creation and the responsibility we have to protect nature.
In an effort to save energy, school was slightly different today, as we had no lights on and we had a picnic lunch that did not require the use of any electricity!
We started our day with an assembly, where we learnt all about how we are stewards of the Earth. We then got into our house groups and began our activities.
On the lower site, children had a chance to; create their own bird feeders, explore the pond and use our gentle hands to care for newts, read stories about the environment, create posters raising awareness of protecting our Earth, create seed bombs that look like planet Earth, use recycled materials to create our own musical instruments, as well as engaging in some PE games to stimulate our bodies and minds.
On the upper site, the children had a chance to; create and perform their own nature drama, go on nature and sustainability fact finding hunts, relax with some yoga, create bird feeders using cheerios, use toilet rolls to create our own birds, use the iPads to do a virtual tour of a solar plant, as well as make planet pledges.
At the end of the day, every class from Nursery to Year 6 gathered together on the lower site for a reflective assembly. The eco-warriors shared their own thoughts to the whole school and we all sang two songs about protecting the planet. Overall, it was an amazing day with a wonderful feeling of unity. At St Alban & St Stephen Catholic Primary School & Nursery, we are all amazing stewards of God’s creation.
