What a range of activities Year 5 have been doing this week. Some of us got out into the beautiful February sunshine on our bikes to learn about road safety in a Bikeability course. We have had great feedback from the instructors – well done, children!
For Wellbeing Week, we all read a story about Humpty Dumpty called, “After the Fall”. It has a theme of resilience so we imagined what feelings Humpty would have had after falling from the wall and thought about how we recover from mistakes and mishaps in life. Bouncing back after hardship is easier with people around you we decided, and so we wrote Humpty a thoughtful letter to help him build his resilience. On the theme of resilience, 5A extended their poetry-writing skills and produced some wonderful poems to help us get over the bumps in the road that we all encounter. A small group presented their poem in our sharing assembly. 5H sang a song from Young Voices – “Energy” – which lifted all our spirits. Well done to the brave performers from 5H who showed the school the moves.
Finally, on Friday, we completed our art unit on still life. Inspired by the work of Cezanne, we carefully observed a small collection of fruit and sketched it out in bold colours. We outlined the wonky shapes of apples and satsumas, just like the French artist did in his work. The children’s pieces are beautiful and it was a wonderful, focused end to the half term.
As well as some wonderful photos below, I will leave you with two of the poems that were written for Wellbeing Week by members of 5A on the theme of “Resilience”.
Don’t worry be happy!
Turn that frown upside down
Give it a grin!
Find your inner courage and
Face it with a friend!
Bounce back up but
Never fear, for I’ll be here.

If you’re feeling sad and weary try to remember this,
We are special in our own way, we are great and you are great!
Remember to be resilient and have courage; we believe in you.
Stay calm and focus on the positives.
You need to bounce back even when things are hard.
Be determined and never give up.
You need to be strong, brave, courageous.
Let’s learn from our mistakes because
When we learn we can shine brightly.
