Nursery celebrated Australia Day on Wednesday this week. We looked at the Australian flag, the shape of the country and we also discovered how far Australia was away from England, the country where we live. The children were free to explore some objects native to Australia, such as a boomerang, some Australian dollars and we watched a clip on the smart board about all the different strange animals that can be found down under. We listened to some music which was being played by a digeridoo, and the children had a go at responding with ‘g’day’, when taking the register. Our final project of the day was looking at some aboriginal art work. Many of the children noticed that it was made from little dots. So, using a cotton bud, the children had a go at creating their own aboriginal masterpiece.
In Reception, we have been learning about the story of Cinderella in our English lessons. We read and compared a few different versions of Cinderella, including Cinderella: Once Upon a World. The children thought about what their favourite part was and why and we discussed the characters thought and feelings. We also made magic wands like the Fairy godmother!
In Maths we have been ‘counting to compare’, which is a fantastic way for our children to count objects, especially objects that are different sizes or collections of objects. This involved lots of hypothesising and trying out different ways to count. The children have become more confident to count larger numbers and have been using the classroom manipulatives to challenge each other to compare different amounts of number.
In RE, we continue with our Celebration topic and have had lots of fun planning a celebration, as well as reflecting on the celebrations that we have in our Parish.
The highlight of our week was that the parents of Maurice (RC) and Kimberly (RL) came into school to teach the children some wonderful Chinese inspired art creations, which the children were able to try out themselves. They also shared a traditional Chinese story to round off our Chinese New Year celebrations.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend from the EYFS Team.
