Year 4 have been learning about human digestion in Science. We created our own version of the digestive system using household items.
We started cutting cream crackers with scissors, for our incisors, added bananas and used a potato masher to represent our molars. We added water as saliva, then used a cardboard tube as our oesophagus. leading to a plastic bag for our stomach. We added orange juice, for stomach acid, and squashed and squeezed the bag to represent our muscular stomach. A leg of a pair of tights represented our intestines which water and nutrients came out of, with help from more muscles (squashing and squeezing again). Finally, we were left with a small amount of dry food which we squeezed through a cup with a hole to represent our anus.
We all took turns and were excited and disgusted in equal measures but we will no doubt remember this investigation.
