As we enter the important season of Advent, the beginning of the Church’s year, we start to prepare for Christmas and to wait with hope for the celebration of Jesus’ birth. Father Andrew explained to the Pupil Chaplains last week that we can think about the coming of Jesus in three ways: his first coming as a baby born on Earth to Mary; his coming in our hearts each Advent as we try to follow him and finally, Jesus’s promise that one day he will come again.
Today, the whole school took part in a very special celebration to mark the start of Advent. As the Pupil Chaplains decorated the Christmas tree, we heard God’s story from the beginning of time to the birth of His Son on Earth, bringing light and life to all. The Christmas tree shining with lights reminds us that we can shine like lights this Advent, showing God’s love to all those around us. We also lit the first purple candle on our Advent wreath, symbolising the hope which the Prophets had. As we sang our Advent songs ‘Light of the World, You Stepped Down into Darkness’ and ‘This Little Light of Mine’, all of us felt a little bit closer to the joy and wonder of that first Christmas so long ago.
