The word ‘advent’ means ‘coming’. Advent is a time of preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus. In school, we marked the start of Advent this Sunday with special assemblies on the lower and upper site in which the Pupil Chaplaincy Team decorated our Christmas trees, and we learnt about the symbolism of the decorations that we put on the tree. We thought about how we can prepare for the coming of Jesus, and sang ‘Light of the World, you came down into darkness’, reminding us that Jesus is the Light of the World. We also sang ‘This Little Light of Mine’, which reminds us that our mission is to shine out the light of God’s love to everyone. The Year 2 choir sang a beautiful rendition of ‘My Lord, He is a-comin’ soon’. All around the school, our prayer tables are covered in purple, the liturgical colour for Advent. We also have our Advent wreaths ready to light the first candle of Hope, which reminds us of the prophets who prepared the way for Jesus’ coming.
What will you do this Advent to prepare for the coming of Jesus, the Light of the World?
