During our science week we did lots of activities including a mini-beast hunt, making bridges and constructing pneumatic monsters. The children were also treated to a visit from the ‘Mad Science’ team who gave a wonderful presentation on forces and light in our Science assembly.
On Friday, we were fortunate to have a visit from Mrs Gordon, an engineer. She talked to us about the connection between science and engineering, and shared some of the exciting projects engineers work on. We learnt about different types of bridges and the forces they endure. We discussed how engineers ensure bridges are stable and safe for pedestrians and cars. Following that, we worked in groups to create our own bridges using paper straws, card, rubber bands and Play-Doh. We had to make sure our bridge could fit boats underneath and support the weight of a car. It wasn’t easy, but we stepped up to the challenge and built some impressive bridges. We would like to thank Mrs Gordon for sharing her knowledge and expertise with us. We had a blast and learnt a lot in the process!
Later, we made moving monsters which operate using pneumatic power. We used syringes and plastic tubing to create the moving mechanism and designed some ferocious looking monsters to complete the job. The children were very pleased with their monsters and enjoyed coming up with fantastic designs. Most of all they looked forward to playing with them once they had finished!
Also a special well done to Mei Shan who managed over 200 skips in the ‘Skip2Bfit’ challenge on Thursday!
